Ravindranath Tagore Beach

The beach at Karwar is called the Ravindranath Tagore beach since the great poet wrote his Prakritir Pratishod while sitting at this beach - but i was not able to understand the reason for writing something called the natures revenge at a place like this - since its a really nice beach - overlooked by hills its a great view to catch - I guess anyone will fall in love with the beach...Just to quote the great poet - since its no use trying to frame my own words as i have the help of a nobel winner : "The sea beach of Karwar is certainly a fit place in which to realise that beauty of nature is not a mirage of imagination, but reflects the joy of the infinite and thus draws us to lose ourselves into it." Rabindranath Tagore,1916

The worst part was the fact that the weather was too hot even on the last weekend of december - so the beach was accesable only after 5:00 pm on both days of our stay - there is huge lot of people who come down to the beach after a days work and is one of the favorite meeting place for the locals- the other things of interest near the beach are : the toy train ride - called the dandakaranya toy train ride ; the INS Chapel war ship museum for a ride on a real warship as well as a video documentry; the Aquarium.

I believe Tagore called this place the Kashmir of Karnataka - didnt get to know the reason why though.

The karwar town is a very small place with few hotel - like the hotel bhadra , hotel paradise - and few lodges...

The two temples visited by us were the Maruti temple and a shiva temple. The priest at the Shiva temple was a charming young boy - its nice to meet a priest who had a smile on his face all the while we were there. There are things to learn from so many people - a young boy - had to open and offer prayer and opened the temple door for us to sit and rest a while - provided us with banana to eat and kept a smile on his face while we chatted in my broken kannada.

There were not too many shopping options even though the casewnuts were a option to bring back from karwar.

Karwar - the quietest get away

I planned to tarvel to karwar - just because we were not feeling so safe to travel to Goa after the Mumbai attacks and wanted to do a beach holiday. The best option was karwar or Gokarna. But due to the lack of staying options at Gokarna - have had to shelve it for two season now - i liked the Swaswara resorts - but its way off my budget for these trips.

The stay was booked at Riveredge Paradise resorts - and the only option to choose was tents - since I booked using Make My Trip - they did not have the option of Cottages or the Log huts - my wife was a bit petrified with the thought of staying in a tent in a mangrove forest near a river. That brings me to the location of Riveredge - its a nice property belonging to the J R Paradise Adventure Resorts Private Ltd. You can get details about all their resorts at http://www.paradiseresorts.info/. They specialise in eco tourism with lot of adventure sports thrown in. The resort at Karwar or more specifically at hankun has the options for Canoeing, Kayaking, Rafting, Tubing and Windgliding. I being a total fool in water sports due to my lack of knowledge of swimming and my 90 Kilo frame - is not meant for most activities - but loved the kanoeing. The best part about the stay at Karwar was getting an upgrade to the log huts. The manager at Riveredge, Mr. Sateesh is a very jovial human being and made the stay very pleasurable - also shahbaz the help at the resort was really good. The other best part for people like me who get bored with food in Bangalore was the food on offer - I had heard about the food at karwar but didnt like the options we got in the city - but the food spread at the resort was ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... finger licking good - if i am allowed to use a copyrighted caption from KFC.

The other best part was meeting Anil Naik - the local driver - who used to be a panchayat member - he was big help on both days when we had to travel to Karwar town.
The best food at Karwar town was on offer at the Open Air Cafe near the war ship located next to the Ravindranath tagore beach.
The details about the karwar town and beach will follow in the next post.
But i cannot complete without thanking Sea bird tourist - our travel provider - may be since it was my first travel on a sleeper coach - really enjoyed the travel except for the 2 - 3 hours near Karwar - which had horrible turns which kept me felling like humpty dumpty about to have a great fall.
But laughs apart - the travel was much less tiring than a sitting arrangement in the best volvo buses.
